Why customers cannot find your website
Here are seven things worth checking when customers are not finding a local business website. You can check each one yourself.
Seven things to check
- Does the site load? Type your address into a browser on your phone.
- Is there a page title that says what you do and where? Look at the browser tab. "Home" is not a title.
- Is there a description? Search for your business name and read what appears under the title. Search engines sometimes write that text themselves, so it does not prove whether a description is set. The free snapshot reports it.
- Is there a page for each service? A customer searching "furnace repair" needs a page about furnace repair of its own, which a list of services on one page cannot give them.
- Do you say where you work? Name the towns on the pages, in sentences a customer would read.
- Is your business name, address and phone number the same everywhere? Check your site, your Google Business Profile and any directories.
- Does a sitemap list your pages? Add /sitemap.xml to your address. If you get an error, no sitemap exists at the usual address.
Questions
How long does it take for changes to show up?
Search engines revisit pages on their own schedule, from days to weeks. Submitting a sitemap tells them the pages exist.
Do I need a blog?
Not to be found for the work you do. Service pages and area pages come first. Helpful articles can come later.
The free site snapshot checks most of these for you in one page. Get your free site snapshot.
